ceci n’est pas une mobile

[this is not a mobile]

ceci n’est pas une mobile is an ongoing art project brought to life through the post.

The works that make up the project are not mobiles — they are compilations of recycled paper, dried flowers, and tape. Like most of my work, they are comprised of things I collect.

Collection is art.

And there is beauty all around us if we pay attention.

To me, collecting is the most effective way to “pay attention”.

I started this project with the goal of inspiring people to do just that.

Upon receiving a piece in the mail, participants are asked to make a collection of their own: flowers, grass, seeds, small-but-aesthetic bits of detritus in the street — the choice is theirs.

When I receive their collection, I continue the chain, creating a new piece in the recipients name and sharing it on with the same instructions.

Like a mobile, this project is a living organism — a piece of art that changes over time, a work that breathes through participation.
